Stunning fortress in beautiful scenery; worth the drive from Sofia! The guide was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic but only spoke Bulgarian. Nice lunch too in one of the cafes in the town.Full review by Cathy D

They have installed some metal steps to make it slightly easier, but there are no passing places, so there can be hold-ups. It was very windy when we were there, and you couldn't stand still and take a photo at the top.

If you're afraid of heights, don't go near the edges of the rocks, because they may freak you out. It is however totally worth it! The stairs are pretty steep, but are secured enough.

The rocks are the fortress and surround the fortress. The parking is next to the entrance to the fort. Get a map or a topo-map to walk the rock formations. They cover a large area at different levels. When we visited the entry gate was not manned. Having said that if they decide to charge entry fees it would be for the fortress not the remainder of the rock formations. Most people I spoke with seemed to blend the fortress with the rock formations, I view the fortress as being built among the formations. I could have spent more time there but was limited on time. Enjoy the scenery, and the town.
