It certainly is worth doing a tour that includes going underneath. You get much closer to the fabric of the building and see what it must of felt like to be a gladiator. Our tour guide with Walks of Italy was an archaeologist who explained how it worked, such as how the animals were moved to the arena etc. Even my 16 son found it interesting.
