This was a challenging and technical hike. The first few KM are through the trees but it starts to open up and eventually you get above the tree line and you’re fully exposed to the crazy winds. Trek… Full review by Matticus01

Hi Kate, May I ask where you stayed the night before and what guide did you use for $15pp and how to contact them? I'd like to get something set up prior to arrival, if possible. We are planning on taking this route and staying in Altagracia. Thank you.

Hi :-) Sorry for the late reply ... Altagracia isn't a very nice town ... are you sure that you want to stay there? My 'GRANDPAcking' post on Ometepe Island gives you all of the info that you need. Have fun.
Can you hike this in normal sneakers or should you invest in proper hiking shoes?

It depends! If you are planning on going right to the top, you need proper hiking shoes. The section above the look-out-point is steep, rocky and covered in little ball-like bits of lava that make it hard work. If you only want to go to the look-out-point, then you could probably get away with trainers (sneakers). You've basically trekking through a forest so the trail has lots of roots, mud and stuff that you'll want decent grip for (especially if it's wet). Some of the tour guides might have a spare pair of decent shoes knocking around which would save you having to buy any. We went to the top (last August) and it was great. The view from the look-out was fantastic; the top was enveloped in a sulphur cloud so we couldn't see anything, but that made if feel even more other-worldy! Enjoy!
