Came here as part of an excursion from a cruise. We walked for about one and a half hours on the Shakadang Trail which was very dramatic, but felt very safe. We also visited the Eternal Spring Shrine… Full review by Anne S
Has anyone booked online/experience the free Outdoor Interpreter service (english) which starts at the Taroko Visitors Centre to Tianxiang? Seems there is a multimedia presentation at this centre & another Landscape of Taroko at the Tianxiang Service Station. Wondering if they are worth attending.

Yes, there is bus service between Hualien and Taroko National Park. We have seen many tourists using it. Check with your hotel on arrival.
Hello, I am planning to go to Taroko National Park in December around Christmas, was going to find a train from Taipei. Did staying in Hualien go OK - or was is super busy/touristy? I wanted to do some all day hikes and sounds like I need a permit as well for that. Are you able to get permits when you get there, or do you know if you should apply on line as well? Thanks

Staying in Hualien is a good option as there are many more lodging and eating options available, but I must say that I did not like it as much as I thought I would. It's pretty easy to get to Taroko from Hualien especially if you have your own transportation (we rented a car from one of the rental lots near the train station ahead of time-not too expensive). We didn't do any reservation required hikes, but from what I've heard is that it's better to get some local help from where you are staying as negotiating the website can be an issue for non-residents. It is certainly worth going over several days so as to not feel too rushed and Taroko is close enough to do as a partial day if that is desired. Very beautiful place to visit and would recommend it to anyone visiting Taiwan! Have fun!
