Great ski experience - it is a nice if not perfect ski area for around a week, including Obergurgl. Phantastic views, classy atmosphere on the cottages, good food and hospitality and you hear nice mu…Full review by Johannes D

The ski area is lovely with lots of wide easy pistes so great for beginners and intermediate level skiers. Biggest drawback of the area and the reason why we have only rated it 3 is because the lift…Full review by a J

Hi I read your review with interest. I have been to Les Gets in France but never this resort or Austria for Skiing. I would be greatful for any tips on accomodation. Most places look like half board, would you recommend any that are close to slopes? We wanted to go self catering, just to try different places in the evening. Is it that sort of resport? Are there many restaurants? Not big party animals but like to go for a few beers in the evening, are there pubs outside of the hotel bars? The runs and lack of queues sound perfect! If you can help with any advice I would be really grateful. Thanks David

Obergurgl is a bit of an oddity in that it consists of a cluster of largely 4* hotels at the head of the valley and not a lot else. There are few bars and restaurants outside hotels making it low key in the evenings. I have stayed at the Enzian, which is in a great location, a couple of times and am returning again this winter. Slope side pitstops are plentiful and pretty good and the Nederhutte on the home run can get wild after about 3pm, but there is a skidoo taxi to take you home if you can't get your skis back on. If you want something with a bit more of a pulse, Solden is a short bus ride down the valley and should satisfy even the most hedonistic.

I am trying to get accommodation in or near Obergurgl for 5 people but it is expensive. Is there accommodation I could stay in between Solden and Obergurgl that would be cheaper? if so how regular is the bus and where should I stay to be close to the bus (ie which streets) as I won't have a car. We are coming from Australia so don't speak German.

Hi The buses between Obergurgl and Solden are very regular and reliable, at least they are in the Winter so I'm assuming that's also true in Summer. I don't think any accommodation in the area is likely to be cheap, but you may want to look at Bergresidenz Mühle, which is less expensive than most and sits between Obergurgl and Hochgurgl, with a bus stop right outside. My own German is very limited but I managed to get along quite happily there for a week, so you should be ok on that front. The locals are very friendly and many speak English.

We got the lift passes on the bus. We did research a bit before our holiday and they seemed to be the same as resort prices if I remember correctly. The added bonus being you have pass on arrival so are ready to go as soon as the lifts are open! You will need to give your tour operator a deposit for the passes - the passes then need to be handed back when you leave. Tis can actual been done to your hotel and not the lift pass place. This is very convenient.. I can't advise on ski hire I'm afraid we took our own equipment. My guess would be cheaper booked through package tour operator - but not sure.
