A day after the owner of an animal sanctuary was killed in a fire on Long Island, volunteers worked Tuesday to care for hundreds of displaced cats.

Authorities say a fire burned down a Long Island cat shelter, killing its founder, who lived there, and more than 100 of the felines he rescued.

"Numerous" cats also perished in the blaze, an agency spokesperson confirmed at a press conference hours later.Of the 300 cats inside at the time of the fire, at least 100 were killed, a police source told ABC 7.
