A rabies diagnosis following a bear attack that injured a man in Carbon County explains the aggression, officials say.

JIM THORPE, Pa. -- The bear that chased people and bit a man in Carbon County had rabies, authorities say. A spokesperson with the Pennsylvania Game Commission said the bear that bit a man in the arm before being shot and killed by a neighbor tested positive for rabies.

A black bear that attacked a Jim Thorpe man Sunday was found to be rabid, according to the Pennsylvania Game Commission. The Game Commission said that rabies in black bears is extremely rare, such occurrences are typically isolated and black bears usually do not exhibit aggression toward people.
