The Senate this week is considering the Laken Riley Act, a Republican-led bill that mandates federal detention for immigrants who are charged with minor crimes and grants broad enforcement powers to states.

The U.S. immigration system isn’t ready for the havoc and expense this bill could unleash. But the real pain will be felt by the immigrants the bill targets.

Party spending leaders are warning the bill is unworkable in its current form and will cost far more to implement than past estimates.
