In an executive order Thursday, Gov. Gavin Newsom extended price gouging protection until March 8 amid an uproar over large rent increases in the wake of the Palisades and Eaton fires.

Los Angeles was already in a housing crisis before the wildfires consumed large parts of the county: There weren’t enough homes to keep up with demand, making it one of the least affordable real estate markets in the country.

While those displaced by the Eaton and Palisades fires are still reeling from the loss of their homes and, in some cases, loved ones, many of them say they’re being victimized yet again by price-gouging landlords.

Real estate experts say California’s anti-price-gouging laws could make it impossible to rent out housing to the thousands of families displaced by the ongoing wildfires unless the governor issues an executive order excluding rentals from the rules.
