The charge, which alleges arson and the killing of Shamiya Stewart, is punishable by life in prison without parole upon conviction. Becker announced the additional charge on Wednesday, Jan. 29.

Shamiya suffered burns over 30% of her body and smoke inhalation, which led to her death on Monday night. Her father described her as a “fighter” while speaking to WOOD before she passed away.

The victim, Shamiya Stewart, died two days after the alleged attack in her Grand Rapids, Mich., home, the Associated Press reported. Her siblings, a 10-year-old and a 7-year-old, both survived.
