Welcome to the Tuesday edition of the Pick Six newsletter! The NFL has started the month of April off with a bang. The league's 32 owners approved a major rule change on Tuesday:
Watson weighed in at a whopping 464 pounds at Florida's pro day. If Watson maintained that weight, and got drafted in April, he would become the heaviest player ever selected in the NFL Draft. Trent Brown and Daniel Faalele hold the current NFL record for heaviest players drafted. They both weighed 380 pounds.
Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb wasn’t happy to hear of the NFL’s decision. Ditto for Chiefs defensive back Jaylen Watson, who has done the “nose wipe” in the past. “Guess I gotta go deep in my bag for new cells that’s bad,” Watson wrote in an Instagram story post. He included a thumbs-down emoji.
Football linemen are typical among the biggest athletes on a team, but former Florida defender Desmond Watson's size and strength are exceptional.
The Browns traded for Watson in March 2022 when he was facing dozens of lawsuits for sexual misconduct, but Cleveland took the chance anyway, acquiring him in a deal with the Texans and then proceeding to pay him more guaranteed money than anyone in NFL history at the time with a five-year, $230 million contract.
Owner Jimmy Haslam fell on the sword for an “organizational decision.” Succeeding with a new QB (Shedeur Sanders? Kirk Cousins?) may still require humility.
Following the trade to acquire Watson, the Browns made an even bigger mistake, giving him a five-year, $230 million contract. Since the trade, Watson has played in a total of 19 games. He has thrown for 3,365 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.
Cleveland Browns co-owner Jimmy Haslam expressed some remorse for trading for Deshaun Watson and giving him a lucrative extension amid the team's woes.
