Fosbury stunned the sports world with a backwards flop over the high jump bar at the Mexican Olympics in 1968. He won gold, and invented a new jumping style still used today.

They could clear a bar nearly eight feet high, the height of a standard ceiling. But on television it didn’t look like they were jumping over a truck. It looked liked they were goofing off.
