Asparagus seeds should germinate in a few weeks. Once the seedlings have sprouted and are a few inches tall, spread a light layer of straw mulch around the soil line to block out weeds.

Asparagus grow best in a slightly acidic soil ... As an alternative, a 1-inch layer of straw is also a useful mulch which will deter weeds and add organic matter to the soil as it decomposes.
