Bob Jenkins, an esteemed motorsports broadcaster at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway who also anchored NASCAR coverage for ABC Sports and ESPN for nearly two decades, died Monday. He was 73.
Bob Jenkins died Monday after an 8-month battle with brain cancer, according to Indianapolis Motor Speedway president Doug Boles. He was 73.
Jenkins joined the IMS Radio Network in 1979 and quickly became popular with his booming, baritone voice and easygoing style. "I grew up a fan of all racing, but especially the Indy 500.
"Bob Jenkins, over the years, he was just a figure that was always there and very much front and center in Indianapolis," said Andretti. "His voice is just absolutely unique.
"Bob Jenkins lent his iconic voice to so many memorable NASCAR moments, telling the story of our sport to millions of fans for years," NASCAR said of 73-year-old Jenkins in a statement.
