ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - Maranatha Baptist Church was former President Jimmy Carter’s home away from home. Some of his fellow church members said they have peace knowing exactly where he is today.

Maranatha Baptist Church was founded in the late 1970s, holding its first service on May 22, 1977, during the first year of Jimmy Carter’s presidency, according to the church website.

Maranatha Baptist, founded in 1977 after several members of Plains Baptist Church left because of that church’s slow and reluctant embrace of Black members, was in search of a new pastor.

Among the invited guests to the private service include Carter's family, members of the Maranatha Baptist Church and Plains-area family and friends of the Carter's.

Former President Jimmy Carter, who died on Dec. 29, 2024, famously taught a Sunday school class at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia.
