Despite its story problems, though, “Mrs. Winterbourne” has engaging characters and a winning formula that make the movie work. It’s a triumph of charm over substance.

In a screwball case of mistaken identity, a grieving Mrs. Winterbourne takes the girl to live with her in the stately Winterbourne mansion, believing she is the wifeof her deceased son.
