All 13 provincial and territorial leaders were in the American capital Wednesday to warn U.S. lawmakers about the potential fallout of Trump’s proposed tariffs on Canadian imports.

After British Columbia Premier David Eby and fellow premiers emerged from a White House meeting with advisers to U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday, he wanted to make something clear: Canada would not become the 51st state.

While the United States uses 5 million tons of aluminum per year, it produces only 14 percent of its needs, Legault said Wednesday in an interview at POLITICO’s office in Virginia. Roughly 60 percent of aluminum imported into the United States comes from Quebec, he said.
