The key component of Venetian plaster is lime, which is soaked in water for a long time - five to 100 years is not uncommon - and then left to age in a cool, dark spot like wine in a cellar.

Some 188 plaster casts were made, and 68 sections of rock containing petroglyphs were cut from the bedrock. Some may be seen at the State Museum of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg.
