Diamondback terrapins are native to coastal salt marshes, estuaries and tidal creeks along the U.S. Atlantic and Gulf coasts and are unique in their capacity to survive in brackish waters.
While most Kennebec Estuary Land Trust projects handle salt marshes, some, like those in Woolwich, function as brackish tidal wetlands, home to unique flora and fauna.
"It could be part of a tourist attraction, you go to the zoo, walk out and into the preserve to see what an estuary salt marsh ecosystem is all about," she said.
