U.S. Navy veteran Bill Potter doesn’t have much patience for those who leave tattered flags flying long after they should have been respectfully retired.

Tattered Confederate flag has checkered past. The North Carolina Museum of History has just acquired a Confederate battle flag linked to a major turning point in the Civil War.

"You should never have a tattered flag flying," said Venita Collier, with Lakewood Elks Lodge. "If your flag is torn and tattered, as you can see ours is right at present, it needs to be replaced.
