Space is growing emptier one star at a time. That's because 80 billion lightyears from Earth, three cosmic beasts are eating stars the size of ten suns.

Astronomers at the University of Hawaii uncovered black hole events so packed with energy, they were the biggest explosions seen since the Big Bang.

Astronomers have captured the largest explosion ever recorded in the Universe since the Big Bang as massive stars get ripped apart by black holes. Called 'extreme nuclear transients', or ENTs, this new type of cosmic explosion occurs when a supermassive black hole eats a star 10 times the mass of the Sun.
