Higganum woodworker Kurt Carlson cut two seats into a 1,500-pound section of the tree and carved an intricate hawk, the school’s mascot, into the ends of the bench.

Suggestions included turning parts of the trunk into a bench at the site for visitors to take in the view, and carving the tree into a memorial sculpture that tells its history on the site.

The carved tree will be at Finch Park, one of the city's oldest and most historic spots. The city project preserves McKinney's history into the trunk of a deceased pecan tree.
