The Louisiana patient who contracted what officials said was the nation’s first “severe” case of avian influenza has died, the state health department said Monday. The person who contracted the H5N1 strain of highly pathogenic bird flu in southwest Louisiana had been hospitalized since mid-December.

Tests done by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department confirmed the disease was found in multiple ducks recovered at the shopping center.

Bird flu has been detected in Travis County, Austin Public Health confirmed on Wednesday. Local public health officials say the state health department confirmed the H5N1 virus was detected in a wild bird that was found dead in North Austin this month.
