A federal grand jury on Wednesday indicted a Chesapeake hospital on charges accusing the facility of health care fraud and conspiracy relating to unnecessary surgeries performed by one of its former surgeons.

Chesapeake Regional Healthcare billed about $18.5 million in questionable procedures performed by Javaid Perwaiz, who was convicted in 2020, prosecutors say.

Regional Medical Center has been charged with healthcare fraud and conspiracy to defraud the U.S. as well as interference with government functions after a federal grand jury returned an indictment Wednesday.

Chesapeake Regional Medical Center allegedly received about $18.5 million in reimbursements from surgeries Javaid Perwaiz performed there.
