The Arizona Cardinals will have at least two vacancies to fill on their defensive staff. A day after they lost linebackers coach Sam Siefkes, who became the defensive coordinator at Virginia Tech, they will need to find a new defensive line coach.

Sam Siefkes also is a former Wofford and Wisconsin-Platteville defensive coordinator, and he worked as a quality control coach for the Minnesota Vikings.

Wilks, who replaces Jeff Ulbrich as the Jets’ defensive coordinator, also has head coaching experience. He was Arizona’s coach in 2018 and was fired after the Cardinals finished 3-13. Wilks also was Carolina’s interim coach when he replaced the fired Matt Rhule in 2022 and went 6-6 with the Panthers.

The New York Jets have their defensive coordinator for Aaron Glenn. Glenn was hired as the next head coach of the Jets earlier this month after a four-year run as the Detroit Lions’ defensive coordinator. The Jets fired head coach Robert Saleh in the middle of last season. Glenn said earlier this week that he will not call defensive plays, so that will presumably fall to Wilks.

Siefkes had come to Arizona after two seasons with the Minnesota Vikings. He replaces the fired Chris Marve at Virginia Tech.

According to Pete Thamel of ESPN, Virginia Tech is targeting Arizona’s linebackers coach Sam Siefkes to be the program’s defensive coordinator. Siefkes just finished his second season with Arizona as LBs coach. He previously was with the Vikings as their defensive quality control coach in 2021 and assistant linebackers coach in 2022.
