• Calcitic lime is mined from natural limestone deposits and crushed to a fine powder. It is also called aglime or agricultural lime and supplies calcium to your soil as it adjusts the pH.

With any source of lime, the seller should tell you its CCE value. As a rule of thumb, you can expect calcitic limestone to range from 85% to 100% CCE, and dolomitic lime from 95% to 108%.

Calcitic lime is a good addition if the soil is too acidic and also low in calcium. But if the pH is OK and you just need calcium, there are other, better amendments, such as gypsum.

You can use dolomitic limestone, which contains magnesium and calcium, or calcitic lime, which is mostly calcium. If it’s a new garden, I’d go with the dolomitic type.
