State Representative John Lujan from the San Antonio area believes human smuggling should be considered, especially after a recent case involving Abelardo Herrera.

Abelardo Herrera reportedly had 13 warrants out for his arrest. He was also arrested in June 2024 when 24 migrants were smuggled in a flatbed trailer.

Abelardo Herrera, 30, was taken into custody on Wednesday. Herrera has a history of smuggling-related arrests, including incidents on Jan. 22, Jan. 14 and June 2024, according to authorities.

Joel Abelardo Herrera, 20, of Yonkers, was charged Oct. 6. Bryant and Hernandez were charged with first-degree rape, a class B felony.

Bexar County sheriff's deputies on Wednesday arrested Laredo resident Abelardo Herrera, 30, who is accused of smuggling 52 migrants, including children, over the past eight months.

Abelardo Herrera, 39, Rafael Mendoza, 36, and Cristobal Eduardo Deleon, 28, each face 26 counts of human-smuggling as well as charges of engaging in organized criminal activity.

College spokeswoman Judi Stokes said Friday that Joel Abelardo Herrera, 20, was suspended from the college following a report of the Sept. 18 incident.
