The New Jersey Devils' collective reaction to Matthew Tkachuk's hit on Nico Hischier was evidence of team growth as well as growth from the captain himself.

New Jersey Devils head coach Sheldon Keefe said postgame Saturday that captain Nico Hischier will be out day to day. Hischier took a cross-check to the ribs from Nick Suzuki during Saturday night’s 4-3 victory versus the Montreal Canadiens.

Injuries have suddenly become a topic of concern for the New Jersey Devils heading into their matchup at the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday.

Suzuki won a faceoff back to Kaiden Guhle, who passed to Carrier. His slap shot eluded Allen, tying the game at 3 just over 3 1/2 minutes into the third period. It was Carrier’s first goal since being traded to Montreal from the Nashville Predators on Dec. 18, 2024.

Hischier never saw him coming. Tkachuk hit Hischier high and sent him onto his back. ESPN play-by-play announcer Bob Wischusen called it “a big, freight-train hit,” and analyst and former Devils defenseman PK Subban screamed, “Whoa!” on the call. Then all hell broke loose.

Dawson Mercer scored two goals in the second period, Dougie Hamilton had a goal and an assist, and Timo Meier had two assists for the Devils (27-17-6), who are 1-2-2 in their past five games. Jacob Markstrom allowed one goal on seven shots before sustaining an undisclosed injury early in the second period.
