Three American League clubs appear to be the leading suitors for Alex Bregman as the two-time All-Star and two-time champion enters his third month on the free-agent market. One National League club still may lurk as a sneaky suitor as of mid-January.

Players pivoting to short-term deals with opt-outs have become increasingly common. Last winter, agent Scott Boras had four free agents -- the “Boras Four” -- who settled for shorter-term contracts with opt-outs when the long-term deals they had hoped for never materialized.

According to Bruce Levine from 670 The Score, the Cubs have had "casual discussions" regarding third baseman Alex Bregman. Levine added that the Cubs are not interested in a long-term deal with Bregman,

It seems they’re on the periphery of the market in case the two-time All-Star considers a shorter term with opt-out clauses.
