Police in New Haven said a passerby spotted a baby seal in the middle of the city on Sunday — and it’s still a mystery how the cute critter got there.

A baby seal was rescued from the streets of downtown New Haven, lethargic and underweight. He is now recovering at a nearby aquarium, which hopes to eventually release him back into the ocean.

The baby male gray seal was discovered Sunday near the downtown of New Haven, Connecticut, Officer Christian Bruckhart told USA TODAY in an email. Although the seal was far from its natural habitat, he was only several blocks away from some of the most famous pizza spots in the city.
