The 'Gundam GQuuuuuuX' compilation movie, now out in Japan, reveals it as a reimagining of 'Mobile Suit Gundam'. While interesting, it feels like a missed opportunity.

An iconic Gundam character is making its grand return for Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX, proving when the new series will take place.

Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning- is a compilation film containing the first four episodes of the upcoming TV anime, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX. The trailers made it look to be something similar to G-Gundam (much like how Gundam 00 shares many elements with Gundam Wing ). However, that is far from what we get in this film.

Animation company GKids has acquired theatrical rights for the North American distribution of “Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning-.” The film will be released Feb. 28 and is directed by Kazuya Tsurumaki (“Evangelion”).

This marks the first collaboration between GKIDS and Bandai Namco Filmworks. Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning- is playing first in theaters on Friday. The anime is screening on 426 theaters, including 52 IMAX theaters.
