Mexico's government on Tuesday questioned the fairness of a 25% tariff ordered by U.S. President Donald Trump on its steel and aluminum imports, stressing that Mexico buys more steel from the U.S. than it exports to its northern neighbor.

Analyst Cody Acree estimated that the average sticker price would rise about $5,790, based on the impact of the currently paused 25% levies on cars and components from Mexico and Canada. That would raise the cost of an average new car above $54,500, or nearly 12% higher than in 2024.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Canada would respond with 25% tariffs "against $155 billion worth of American goods."
