The city of Austin has hired Dallas Police Department police chief Eddie Garcia as an assistant city manager overseeing public safety, according to an internal memo sent to the mayor and council members that KXAN obtained.

Police Chief Eddie Garcia's resignation was a shock to Dallas' top officials. One council member said she was "blindsided" by the news that Garcia is leaving for Austin.

DALLAS — Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia has told city officials that he plans to retire from law enforcement and appears to be in line to take a new position with the city of Austin, multiple sources told WFAA. The move means Garcia would be joining T.C. Broadnax, Dallas' former city manager who took the same role in Austin earlier this year.
