Feb 7, 2014 · The Somerset Freeway was a proposed stretch of road which would've allowed for the connection of I-95 (Scudder Falls Bridge) to I-287 near Franklin and Piscataway Township. The road was intended to carry traffic all the way up to the George Washington Bridge, making for a direct interstate connection between Philadelphia and New York City.

The first alignment of the Route 92 Freeway, proposed in the 1950s, was to begin at an interchange with Interstate 95, known as the Somerset Freeway in the community of Skillman (in Montgomery Township).

It was the first section of freeway in New Jersey which was built as part of I-95 and not under another designation. Because of the concerns of northern New Jersey property owners and the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, a new proposal for I-95 known as the "Somerset Freeway" was developed by 1972.

This discontinuity was caused by the 1983 cancelation of the Somerset Freeway, which would have connected the former Trenton segment of I-95 in Hopewell Township northeast to I-287 in Piscataway. From here, I-95 would have followed present-day I-287 to exit 10 on the New Jersey Turnpike in Edison.

Late in 1964, the initial proposed route of the Somerset Freeway (I-95) was unveiled as shown above. This route was recrafted from the remnants of the North Jersey Expressway (I-95) proposal which was rejected earlier that same year.
