May 18, 2019 · The rubber ring around the air cleaner stack had pushed up blocking the intake to the air cleaner stopping the air flow. The other incident happened in a truck I owned that had a Cat retarder. The valve that charges the retarder with oil had stuck in the on position. With the retarder fully ingauged it would not let the engine run.

The oil used for the retarder comes from the oil sump of the engine, which must therefore have a larger capacity. This section of the oil pump is entirely separate from the engine lubrication section of the oil pump.

Nov 16, 2016 · They heated the engine oil a bit but not any hotter than the oil gets when pulling a grade, the engines temperature was never an issue. They also were very effective compared to the Jacobs brakes of the time and they made no noise. I am not aware of any downsides to a Cat retarder and I drove them for many years in severe duty applications.

Jan 31, 2009 · A 3406B was a good engine in it's time, but was quickly dropped in our area when the N14, and the series 60 came out. You would get 650,000K before the head gasket would leak and the back 3 to 4 kits had to be pulled and the block cut, water pumps leaked every 6 months, they modified the head to increase flow it made it better.
