The stone Bridge over the River Tees connects the town of Barnard Castle with Startforth. It dates from the 14th Century and is overlooked by the castle. It was sometimes called "County Bridge" as it was formerly on boundary between County Durham and Yorkshire.

Barnard Castle is a historic town and a Norman castle was built at this strategic point in 1112 by Bernard Baliol. The castle stands high above the river and the bridge apparently built or rebuilt in 1569, though a stone on the parapet says 1596.

Barnard Castle is also four miles (6.4 km) from the A66, with access to the M6 to the west and the A1(M) to the east.

In 1603, Barnard Castle was passed to Robert Carr, the Earl of Somerset, by King James the First.
