Kiefer got his first film role in the comedy drama Max Dugan Returns (1983). Sutherland's first major role was in the Canadian drama The Bay Boy (1984), which earned Sutherland and director Daniel Petrie, Genie award nominations for best actor and best director, respectively.

Kiefer Sutherland plays a Civil War veteran who lost his religious faith and became a gunslinger. He was somehow traumatized by the Battle of Shiloh, but we never learn quite how or on which side he fought.

This will be the second film in which Donald Sutherland and his son, Kiefer Sutherland, are in scenes together. Both Sutherlands shared brief screen time together in the 1983 film Max Dugan Returns (1983) (which was Kiefer Sutherland's film debut).

In 1872, JOHN HENRY CLAYTON (Kiefer Sutherland) retires as a gunfighter and returns to his hometown of Fowler, Wyoming in hope of repairing his relationship with his estranged father, REVEREND CLAYTON (Donald Sutherland).

At the beginning Kiefer Sutherland is chopping down a dead snag, the camera pans to the top of the tree and you can clearly see the tree is dead with no needles on it. When the tree hits the ground, you now see a totally living tree with live green needles right to the top.

Kiefer Sutherland has denied the rumor started on social media that he picked on Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, and Jerry O’Connell on the set of Stand By Me.
