The clutch doesnt change the gears, it just takes the load off them so that another mechanism can change them. If you change gears under load, it can damage stuff. Expensive stuff. A gearbox in a car isnt like a bike chain, where you move the chain over to select the gear. In a car, the gears pairs are all always in contact with each other.

Jul 31, 2022 · Avoiding front derailleur shifting or to be able to quickly shift into much harder gears is more important. Avoiding to much chain movement is again a good reason to not do it as recommended with shifting into extreme gears. In general you get best practices with your shimano/sram/* manuals, what the manufacturer recommends that you avoid.

And if you're good enough with shifting and rev-matching, you don't even have to use the clutch to change gears except to get moving in 1st. Although I don't advise it because it can wear your transmission syncros pretty rapidly and cause additional wear to the gears and bearings if you grind, due to the metal shavings that will come from doing so.

Apparently there's a lot more to tuning that they don't tell you, including things like tire size, width, etc. I guess the optimal gearing is a mid-range final ratio and then short ratios for the gears, and use a lot of gears.
