The clutch doesnt change the gears, it just takes the load off them so that another mechanism can change them. If you change gears under load, it can damage stuff. Expensive stuff. A gearbox in a car isnt like a bike chain, where you move the chain over to select the gear. In a car, the gears pairs are all always in contact with each other.
