The Many Moons of Jupiter Galileo published his discovery of the first 4 moons in 1610. That number stayed stubbornly at 4 until 1892 when a 5th was discovered by Edward Emerson Barnard, known better for Barnard’s Star. Since the 1900’s many more have been discovered as telescopes improved. The minor moons, as the 88 non-Galilean ones are known, are generally much smaller, having radii of only a few kilometers.
